The goal of the Yale Department of Athletics is to be “Champions of Champions” of the Ivy League. The Department is grateful to have the loyal support and interest of ASC members as we strive to recruit outstanding student-athletes to compete for the Elis.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has rules for coaches, student-athletes, staff members, friends, and alumni of Yale. As members of the Yale team, we need you to be familiar with the NCAA regulations that apply to friends and alumni. Please take a moment to review the rules listed below. If you have any questions about any of these regulations, please contact Jason Strong, Director of Compliance at (203) 999-5495.
The NCAA bans alumni from contacting prospective student-athletes (or their coaches) unless the alumnus is an enrolled member of an ASC, and such contact is made in the course of normal admissions work. In short, members of an ASC cannot treat athletes differently from other candidates in the general recruiting process. Accordingly, individual ASC members should not interview only athletes, or telephone only athletes, etc. However, it is certainly permissible to invite prospective students from your area, including athletes, to school visits, receptions, and other recruiting events. While we encourage all ASC members to assist the Admissions Office in recruiting qualified students to Yale, all recruiting targeted to prospective student-athletes must be done by coaches and designated institutional staff members. Alumni are prohibited from having contact with prospective student-athletes for the specific purpose of recruiting students for the athletics program.
As an ASC member, you may:
- contact and interview prospective students who are assigned to you by your ASC director.
- contact the appropriate Yale coach to recommend a prospect.
- talk to a recruited athlete on the telephone if he/she calls you, but you cannot talk about the athletics program.
- view a prospect’s athletic event, but you cannot contact prospective student-athletes or their parents or guardians specifically because of their athletic involvement. If you identify an outstanding student-athlete, you should contact the Yale coach.
- offer assistance to the coaching staff by providing lodging or meals to coaches when they are in your area to contact and evaluate prospects.
- provide summer jobs and internships to student-athletes subsequent to their senior year of high school after he/she has made a commitment to the Admissions Office to attend Yale (please contact the coach prior to contacting the prospective student).
